12V TV Buying guide

12V TV buying guide for caravans and motorhomes

If you own a caravan or regularly camp and still want the luxury of a TV every once in a while, then there’s a solution for you, even if you’re off the grid, The solution is a 12Volt TV.

12volt TV’s are TVs that have a 12volt socket input rather than a conventional 240v input (or both). this allows them to run directly from the battery in your caravan or motorhome.

Modern advances in televisions have meant they now consume far less electricity than they used to, meaning they won’t drain your battery very quickly.

What to look for when purchasing a 12V TV

Firstly look for a tv that will run on 12Volt/24volt and 240v. this is ideal for both on-grid and off-grid use.

Some specialized tv’s come with their own built-in batteries that can be charged when plugged into the grid. Please see link later in this post.

What size 12v tv – Obviously this is down to your preference. what I would suggest you keep in mind is that the larger the tv the more power it will consume. the standard size most people purchase these days is around 20″ -24″

12V TV and DVD combo – If you regularly travel to rural locations then chances are unless you have a (satellite TV setup) you will have an occasion where it is impossible to receive terrestrial aerial tv. as a result, the alternative is a DVD movie. A lot of the 12v Tv’s on sale are TV-DVD combinations so keep this in mind when looking.

Smart 12V TV – If you enjoy watching Netflix or amazon prime then you should look for a smart 12V smart tv. these tend to be a little more expensive but well worth it. If you purchase a 12V tv without this built-in feature there are aftermarket sticks available that you simply plug into the back of your tv. I would recommend the Amazon stick as this includes Netflix, Amazon prime, BBC Iplayer, Channel 4oD, ITV Hub, etc… see below link.

12v TV weight- The last thing to keep in mind is the weight of the TV. Weight is the enemy when it comes to caravans and campervans. If you’re going to be mounting this on some kind of bracket ensure that the mounting is capable of holding the TV’s weight. Keep in mind that during transit any movement of the 12V TV on that bracket will have a hammering effect and eventually rip the bracket off its mount. To avoid this ensure the TV is very firmly fixed with no movement.

Below I have chosen three stands out  12V TV’s on Amazon. I have chosen these as they are very reputable brands and good quality. They are also very light and have a very good energy rating. We recommend the use of Amazon as their customer service is exceptional, their prices are as low as you will find and delivery is very quick (sometimes the next day).

The cheapest of my 12volt TV selections is 16″ and has a built-in DVD player & satellite receiver. its great choice for small to medium size caravans and motorhomes.

My Mid range 12Volt TV  model is 22″ and again is a DVD combination. Again this is a great choice for small to medium size caravans and campervans

Lastly, the premium 12v tv choice is 32″ and has a built-in battery that will charge when on the grid. This means you’re not consuming your main battery charge when watching your tv. Ideal for larger caravans and campervans
