If you’re still reading this then you’re probably struggling with what has now become an age-old problem in many static caravan parks in rural and coastal locations. 

You either have very poor broadband speeds through your parks WIFI connection or you have no phone line to receive your own broadband.

Before we begin. we must inform you that satellite internet has now been largely superseded by 4g internet connections. There are a number of reasons for this, Setup costs are much lower, 4g equipment has become far more powerful and reliable (if you buy the correct stuff), ongoing service costs are much lower and speeds are faster. we strongly suggest that if 4g internet is available to you then you should take it. If you have no internet connection then you probably feel cut off from the world. Well don’t worry there’s a solution and it’s called Satellite broadband.
Satellite broadband has come on leaps and bounds in recent times. To you, it will feel no different to using your normal at home internet connection which has a fixed phone line.
Satellite broadband is also very reasonable in terms of cost, with many service providers and packages to choose from.

So how do you get Satellite Broadband internet for caravans?

At this point, you can choose to allow a service provider to set up for you or buy the equipment yourself and help yourself to a bit of DIY.

A satellite dish. much like a sky satellite dish but slightly bigger. you can get these dishes in a motorized format but this is only really applicable to motor homes and touring caravans. For static caravans a simple static dish is ideal.
So now you may be wondering how do I know if I can get a signal? well, here’s the thing it doesn’t matter where you are in the UK you will always have a signal. as long as you can point the satellite with a clear line of sight to the sky facing South. If you need a quick reference. Sky satellite dishes point to the very same satellite your broadband uses. Just look for the nearest sky tv dish and you will know the general direction.
You will also need a broadband Satellite modem and a router. These are quite different from the modems you will have seen in the past and are considerably more expensive.

What sort of speeds will you get with satellite broadband?

Satellite broadband achieves very good speeds of 20Mb/s download and 4Mb/s upload. If this seems like gobbledygook to you then, in brief, this is the same speeds you will receive on standard broadband at home using a fixed phone line. It’s fast enough for several people to use the connection at once. This sort of speed will be more than enough for any use you would require in a static caravan or holiday home. Do note that although broadband speeds are quite fast there is one downside and that’s the latency. In effect, latency means how long it takes in real time to send and receive data. think of it as a delay with someone speaking to you from the other side of the world on a phone call. The relatively slow latency speeds only really matter in the real world for 1 thing and that’s gamers. if you intend to play a lot of online gaming via your pc or games console, then, unfortunately, satellite broadband isn’t the solution for you and your caravan.

Ok so here’s the most important bit, how much will it cost?
the monthly subscription cost is comparable to the normal packages you receive on a standard fixed phone line. However, the download limitations can be much lower than you’re usually used to. You should expect to pay in the region of £45 a month for around £25GB of download data. 25GB is more than enough for the average family.

One thing to note is the equipment may be quite expensive. When you receive broadband at home through a fixed phone line, you will typically receive the modem for free as part of your package. Satellite broadband is slightly different. You will have to outlay the cost of the hardware before you can use your Satellite Broadband package in your caravan. The typical cost of equipment is roughly £400 but this will obviously increase if you choose the expert install option.
If you hire your caravan for holidaymakers than any financial outlay can easily be recouped and profit made by charging extra for use of the internet. I recently visited a park that charged £15 for 2gb of data. this was more than enough to keep my family happy on their tablets and mobile phones for the 2 days we spent. if you were to do the same and were paying the suggested £45 for 25Gb of data per month. you could charge £20 a week for 5Gb of data effectively making you £35 profit. Better still if you own caravans in close proximity to each other you can share the satellite broadband using standard off the shelf broadband repeaters which cost approximately £25 each. You can then increase your data limit to let’s say 50gb of data and for approximately £60. with this option, you would more than double your profits and be able to pay the initial hardware cost off within 6 months. Not only would you receive additional income but your caravan would become more desirable to holidaymakers.
